Wipro reported higher rupee-denominated revenue but weaker contract bookings in results released October 15, underscoring an uneven outlook for the technology-services company.
Its quarterly announcement put gross revenue at ₹247.5 billion for the three months ended September 30, up 9.1% from a year earlier. Net income fell 1.9% to ₹32 billion.
Bookings point to a different picture
Total bookings reached $2.595 billion, down 22.9% from the previous quarter in constant-currency terms. Large-deal bookings fell 58.6% sequentially to $674 million.
Bookings represent contract value recorded during a period, rather than revenue already earned. A decline therefore raises questions about future work without directly measuring current-quarter sales.
Margins improve as growth stays modest
The IT-services operating margin was 16.5%, up half a percentage point from the previous quarter. Constant-currency IT-services revenue was flat sequentially and increased 0.6% year over year.
For the quarter ending December 31, Wipro forecast IT-services revenue of $2.571 billion to $2.625 billion, corresponding to a sequential constant-currency change between a 1.5% decline and 0.5% growth.
Reuters reported on October 16 that shares rose nearly 4% as the revenue performance outweighed investor concerns over weak bookings and the near-term outlook.
The figures show why revenue, margins and new contracts need to be read together: stronger reported sales do not automatically mean faster growth ahead.
