HSINCHU, TAIWAN — Semiconductor manufacturer TSMC published third-quarter financial results on October 15, 2026, reporting US$46.72 billion in revenue for the three months ended September 30. The company’s results underline the strong demand for sophisticated chip-manufacturing capacity used in artificial intelligence systems, smartphones and high-performance computing.
The numbers behind the chip surge
According to TSMC’s official release, third-quarter revenue rose 50.9% year-over-year in New Taiwan dollars. Calculated in U.S. dollars, revenue was up 41.2%. These growth rates differ because of currency translation and should not be treated as interchangeable.
TSMC reported NT$763.06 billion in net income, an increase of 68.7% from the same quarter a year earlier. Diluted earnings reached NT$29.43 per share. The manufacturer’s gross margin was 66.4%, while its operating margin reached 58.7%.
Newer semiconductor processes gain ground
The company said chips manufactured on its 2-nanometer process contributed 8% of wafer revenue in the quarter; 3-nanometer technology represented 33%, and 5-nanometer technology accounted for 28%. Together with 7-nanometer chips, technologies classified as 7 nanometers and more advanced supplied 79% of wafer revenue.
Those shares describe TSMC’s wafer revenue mix, not the percentage of all semiconductor chips sold worldwide.
Why it matters
AI training clusters and inference services require processors manufactured using advanced fabrication technologies. TSMC’s results provide concrete evidence of continuing demand for those processes, while leaving open important questions about future supply, costs and broader technology spending.
